SculpSure or Coolsculpting:
Which is the Best Liposuction Alternative?
Looking for a liposuction alternative? Check out the two non-invasive treatment leaders that eliminate fat and contour your body, Coolsculpting and Sculpsure. Learn why Sculpsure is superior.
Both Coolsculpting and Sculpsure are FDA approved for fat reduction, both yielding about 25% fat reduction. However, the two technologies work completely differently. Coolsculpting delivers freezing temperatures to cause cryolipolysis (freezing the fat cells). Sculpsure utilizes a precise laser energy to target and kill fat cells (laser lipolysis).
With Coolsculpting, a suction-powered applicator pulls both the skin and the fat into the hand piece. The freezing temperatures are applied for approximately one hour. Following treatment, the hand piece is removed revealing a discolored, raised, frozen rectangle of tissue looking similar to a frozen stick of butter. The technician will massage this frozen tissue down after the treatment. Sound yucky and painful? Patients do report pain – (1) when the suction applicator is applied; (2) during the freezing process and; (3) while having that ‘stick of butter massaged.’ Pain (often so severe as to require prescription pain medication), soreness and bruising after treatment are commonly reported to last for several weeks after the treatment.
Sculpsure applicators lay flat against the skin inside a plastic frame that is belted to the body (no uncomfortable suction). The applicators deliver the laser energy to heat up and damage the fat cells. Since fat cells heat up much faster than they freeze, the Sculpsure procedure takes only a fraction of the time, only 25 minutes. Sound quick and easy? Most patient report 25 minutes of waves of heating and cooling, describing an overall feeling of warmth. A few patients report cramping and moderate discomfort during the treatment, but tolerate it well due to the short treatment time. Slight tenderness to the area is normal for a few days to a couple of weeks after treatment.
Wondering what effect these treatments have on the skin? Fat cells are more sensitive to temperature extremes than skin cells, so with Coolsculpting, fat cells freeze before the skin cells freeze. But it’s hard to get that frozen stick of butter mental image to go away, right?! With Sculpsure, the laser wavelength is specifically targeted for fat cells and has no effect on any other tissue such as skin, vessels and muscles. For added comfort, the Sculpsure treatment applicators provide a constant cooling on the surface of the skin. After Sculpsure, the skin may be slightly pink, but is cool to the touch.
Fortunately, we enjoy rapid advances in medical technology and Sculpsure is a great example. Prior to Sculpsure’s FDA approval in 2015, Coolsculpting was the ‘best thing going’ for non-invasive fat reduction. Clearly, research scientists and medical doctors developed a superior treatment in Sculpsure: shorter treatment time (about half the time), less discomfort during the treatment and less discomfort after the treatment. Out with the old (Coolsculpting) and in with the new (Sculpsure).
