Unwanted Fat in the Lower Body
Hips, Thighs, Buttocks
AKA Saddle bags, Thunder Thighs, Bubble Butts, Banana Rolls
Okay ladies. Curvy hips and thighs and round buttocks are sexy. But are you stuck with extra fat around your hips and upper thighs? Are your hips beyond fat hips? Are your thighs beyond fat thighs? At some point, unwanted fat on the hips becomes the dreaded “saddle bags.” Your thighs become “ham hocks” or “thunder thighs.” Your backside becomes a “bubble butt” or you develop a “banana roll.” Your sexy curves become unsightly angles and bulges.
Why me? You ask.
Evolution caused the female body to deposit fat on the hips and thighs and buttocks for a special purpose – to provide nourishment for babies. For this reason, the female body distributes fat onto the hips, thighs and buttocks, then zealously guards these fat deposits.
If you store excess fat on your hips, thighs and buttocks, it’s a good news/bad news situation. The good news is that fat stored below the waist does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or diabetes to the same degree as fat in your midsection. However, lower body fat is very difficult to reduce. The bad news is you will likely need medical treatments to reduce it.
Clearly, genetics, and specifically the “Y” chromosome, give many women the propensity to deposit excess fat in the hips, thighs and buttocks. And even females of a healthy BMI carry a higher percentage of body fat than males. This “female fat distribution” (fat deposited in the hips, buttocks and thighs) is caused in part by the hormone estrogen. Lower body subcutaneous fat is the most stubborn fat of the body – the saddle bags, thunder thighs, bubble butts and banana rolls.
Heredity also plays a part. If your mother had a problem with saddle bags, large thighs or buttocks, you have an increased tendency to suffer from it.
